Genocide Studies Certificate

Information

World Without Genocide offers a certificate program designed to develop global citizens who are aware of past and current atrocities and who will advocate for human rights.

Despite the words ‘never again’ after the Holocaust, the 20th century became the age of genocide, with subsequent atrocities in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Guatemala, Chile, East Timor, Argentina, and many other places.

The 21st century has already seen genocide in Darfur and crises in Myanmar, China, Syria, Congo, India, Ukraine, Ethiopia, and elsewhere.

Certificate Requirements

1.) The certificate requires that participants attend at least 8 World Without Genocide programs.

Six programs should be chosen from programs about the following genocides:

  • Holocaust (required)
  • Herero (in current-day Namibia)
  • Armenians
  • Cambodia
  • Bosnia/former Yugoslavia
  • Rwanda
  • Darfur
  • Guatemala
  • Argentina
  • East Timor
  • Native Americans

Two programs covering a current conflict, genocide, or critical issue:

  • Myanmar
  • Uyghurs
  • India
  • Syria
  • Congo
  • Yemen
  • Ukraine
  • Ethiopia
  • Afghanistan
  • LGBTQ persecution
  • Climate crisis
  • Other topics as current events suggest

For programs that address several conflicts or genocides, that program may be applied to one of the genocides or EITHER a current conflict/genocide/issue. Programs will not count twice.

Participants will prepare short papers (350-500 words) following each program and a final summary paper (1,000 words).  Participants should record their event attendances and paper submissions as requirements are completed.

2.) Action agenda

In collaboration with the Executive Director, Associate Director, or the Programs and Operations Director, the candidate will outline and carry out a brief advocacy plan to support World Without Genocide activities. Candidates can review materials in the ‘Toolkits’ section of the website for many suggestions and guidelines on easily-implemented activities.  The candidate will be evaluated on successful completion of the action agenda.

3.) Required Readings

To enhance your understanding of past and present genocides, please read Genocides and Conflicts in the 20th and 21st Centuries: A Book and The Justice Project, which highlights international tribunals and mechanisms to hold perpetrators to account and to end impunity. Both selections are available online at  https://worldwithoutgenocide.org/genocides-and-conflicts

Timing

This certificate opportunity begins with programs sponsored or co-sponsored by World Without Genocide at the start of the candidate’s registration and acceptance for the program.

World Without Genocide will also offer continuing education credits for lawyers, teachers, and social workers for these programs. This is separate from the certificate program.  Program participants may receive both continuing education credits and credit for the certificate.
