Caucus Resolutions, 2012

Minnesota party caucuses will be held Tuesday night, 7:00 pm.  For the location nearest you, see http://caucusfinder.sos.state.mn.us.  These meetings are an opportunity for every Minnesota voter to participate in the political process.  We encourage the following resolutions to be introduced at all party caucuses:

Humanitarian Aid to Sudan

Whereas food and medicine are much-needed by the people of war-torn South Kordofan and Blue Nile states, which are on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, and

Whereas the Famine Early Warning Systems Network has declared that the situation in these two states will reach a crisis level by March, and

Whereas the government of Sudan has denied access to humanitarian agencies, and

Whereas  many human rights organizations including the Enough Project, American Jewish World Service, United to End Genocide,  Investors Against Genocide, Stop Genocide Now, and Act for Sudan are urging the government of the United States to take steps to save lives of innocent people who are at great risk,

Therefore

Be it resolved that the government of the United States deliver aid in a cross-border operation to the people of South Kordofan and Blue Nile states without permission from the government of Sudan.

No Water Shut-off in Winter Months in Minnesota

Whereas utilities in Minnesota are prohibited from turning off residential heat and electricity during winter months, October 15 – April 15, for nonpayment of bills, and

Whereas residential occupancy without running water is a health emergency, and

Whereas municipalities have no prohibition from turning off residential water service during winter months for nonpayment of bills,

Therefore

Be it resolved that the state of Minnesota will insure residential access to water during the winter months, October 15-April 15.

Finding Purpose

“When I was a little girl, I had nightmares that I called my ‘Anne Frank’ dreams.  I was being pursued by Nazis and my life was in grave danger.  I always woke up at the moment of capture, heart pounding, sweating, and with the sense that next time I would not be so fortunate.

“I thought everybody had these dreams.  I don’t really know why these fears were so much a part of my life.  My parents were both born in this country; their parents had emigrated from Europe long before the Holocaust; the family members we’d lost were distant, both in memory and in family ties.  But these dreams persisted for years.

“I had other experiences as well, and it’s only now, retrospectively, that everything points towards an inevitable personal commitment to a world without genocide.  I’ll tell you about some of these experiences.
